Mary Cain was a renowned Santa Clara pottery matriarch and daughter of the acclaimed potter Christina Naranjo, and grand-daughter of SaraFina Tafoya. Her innovation in pottery was seen in her deeply carved surfaces and highly polished finish. This crafting process involved hand-coiling, shaping, sanding, applying a slip coat, and stone-polishing. Firing too was performed traditionally, using an open fire for red pottery and smoke application with manure for black. Her influence and legacy remain in her family of noted potters, which includes daughters Tina Diaz, Joy Cain, and Linda Cain, sons Billy Cain, and Doug Cain, and granddaughters Tammy Garcia and Autumn Borts-Medlock. Mary passed away in 2010.
